Part One of Assignment One

Posted by Bill Oldham on Sunday, October 19, 2008.

The first part of Assignment One was outlined as follows in the Assessment page of the LMS at the University of Melbourne:

Set up your own online communication and portfolio webspace which will eventually include

  1. online journal of posts, comment and links to educational resources and digital items that are accessible to others in the subject for their own comment and feedback to you

In response to  this requirement, I have listed below most of the links to various resources used while completing this part of the assignment.

(2) Develop and deliver an online tutorial on one aspect (theory or practice) of online teaching and learning for other students in the subject

For the online tutorial part of the assignment, I have created a tutorial titled Google Goodies with the purpose of introducing my classes as well as other OET classmates to the advantages of using Google for most of their Web 2 tools. You will find the starting point for this at the post called Edublog Frustrations.

(3) Online report presenting comment, credit, references and links to a portfolio of resources for online teaching and learning

You’re looking at it!! this part will be continued in the next post which looks at some of the educational theory.

But to sum up this part of the report, I can say that creating, presenting, teaching and learning about Google Goodies has really helped my classroom ICT skills to improve.

You’re looking at it!

Part Two of Assignment One

Posted by Bill Oldham on Sunday, October 19, 2008

Wish list – that Edublogs had an icon to control the size of the text like blogger does rather than forcing you into html view to make changes in the code.

The second part of Assignment One was outlined as follows in the Assessment page of the LMS at the University of Melbourne:

Eventually by October 19th the space needs to include communications areas links to at least 6 online educational resources that are described and contextualised by specifying  an educational  purpose, audience and possible educational activities.

(1) The online space must be accessible for reading and commenting or reading and writing to other members of the subject
This has been accomplished by the use of the Melbourne University LMS that has a wiki, a blog, Skype chat and talk, Elluminate virtual classroom and a discussion board for the OET students. These provide the students a chance to share information, discuss theories, raise questions and to collaborate with each other on group projects. the audience for these Web 2 tools on the LMS include the enroled students  and the staff that are guiding the course such as Ted Clark and all the hangers on.

As well as using the LMS, I have created a Yahoo Geocities website, a Blogger OET personal blog, a video clip on YouTube and an online tutorial for use by other OET students to learn about google  web 2 tools that are available.

(2) The online space must have at least 6 different resources that are accessible by links or download by others in the subject

This is cut and pasted here from the first part of the assignment:

Please note that the wiki, blog and discussion board of the LMS are not available for public viewing.

(3) An online tutorial is prepared and made accessible on a particular nominated date

The online tutorial starts here.

(4) A set of links to at least 6 responses or comments in other students communications and resources

For this one, I have to ask you to look through the discussion board, wiki and blog on the OET part of the LMS since I lost this on my first try with Edublogs when the Edublog system was improved(??). I’ll try to find a few comments in the blogs of the other students that I have made.

  • link to my comment in Richard’s blog about his podcasting tutorial.
  • link to deep and meaningful exchnage of comments with Ben Abbott in regard to his posting of Assignments on his blog.
  • link to comment in Dayle’s blog about blogs vs wikis

(5)  A short online report that identifies educational features and references for the digital items included

I will split this into two parts-what we use in OET and what we use in our own development of an online tutorial.

Through the use of the LMS, we were able to use a variety of tools to share and collaborate on line with the course leader, Ted Clark, and with the other students in the group. As usual, some of the students took the role of leading students very quickly. Ones that come to mind are Ben Abbott, Sue Austin and Dale Hall. from the start of the class, these people contributed on a weekly if not daily basis to the discussions of what online education and training meant to each of us.

For myself, I came into OET expecting reams of paper on how to put information on line for students to access from home. Boy, did I get that wrong.

Instead, I have been learning the differences between Moodle (opensource) and Blackboard (used at chisholm TAFE) and a third one called Typo 3.

But the best part of all has been looking at the way that web 2 tools can be used as part of a LMS or CMS to enhance the teaching and learning of students and staff.

Now in regards to digital items included and educational references. In the spirit of OET collaboration, I have taken these from Ben Abbott’s blog. He also does it a hell of a lot better than I do.

But for my own attempt, I will list as follows:

  • Blogs-use Blogger and Wordpress. Stuff Edublogs.
  • podcasts-use Audacity
  • screen casts-use Jing or Camstudio but mainly Jing
  • Browser-Firefox 3
  • RSS feeds -google Reader
  • Internet-use voip Skype or GTalk
  • wikis-use PBwiki.com
  • lms or cms-use Moodle
  • Uploading of images and videos-use Picasa
  • How to videos-use Youtube and Teachertube
  • virtual classroom-Elluminate
  • mashups-use google maps

Well, that’s all folks!

    Edublog Frustrations

Posted by Bill Oldham on Sunday, October 19, 2008

The last week has been frustrating due to the difficulties of trying to log into Edublogs, being asked to change the password, and then waiting what seems like all day for it to reappear as an email from Edublogs with the new password.

This Assignment One began as a class exercise to get around the problem of students having several different accounts with various usernames and passwords that would be quickly forgotten. This was solved by using a Google account and the students writing down their username and password for me to keep if and when they had difficulty logging in.

This class introduction to Google docs can be found at my Yahoo Geocities account. You can either click a print or a screen version from this location. This is the tutorial for Assignment one that was put on line.

This assignment led to a request to due a presentation to the combined Apple User Society of Melbourne and the Melbourne Mac Users Club of the Multimedia SIG members. I would like to say that the audience was of 350 to 400 people actively asking questions. In fact, it was about 21 people and four of those kept falling asleep. Fair enough. they were only doing to me what I have been doing to them for the last five years.

A request was made by the editor of AUSOM (Apple User Society of Melbourne) news for the Google goodies to be published in the October magazine.

The publication of the article led to another presentation for the AUSOM Retirees SIG. ths numbers almost tripled as did the numbers of those that fell asleep. Should I regard this as a hint? However, they were all awake at the finish after I used a bang gun as part of a magic effect to entertain the ones that were still awake. (when I am not teaching or playing on a computer, I work as a magician.)

Back to more serious matters. After reading the Zen Of PowerPoint to try to learn how to keep them awake, I tried the idea of an interesting background, an occasional joke, and the promise of notes to be handed out at the end. You can see this at my Yahoo Geocities account. Due to the geocities limitation of 4.2 MB download per hour, I first put up a compacted PowerPoint presentation. This does not work and I have not been able to figure out why. I have replaced it with the full size file. This now downloads and opens up as expected.

Magical Bill’s Online Education and Training Blog

    Hi everyone.

My name is Bill Oldham and this is my second unit in the Melbourne Uni Ed (ICT).

I’m looking forward to meeting and talking and texting to you on line.

It’s taken me a few extra days to get this blog going because of a DNS problem that is intermittent. It only seems to appear when I want to start the blog.

    All for now.

Regards, Bill Oldham (sessional teacher at Chisholm TAFE and Vic Uni)
